LIFEMAKING: An Inclusion Seeker’s Guide to Healing Their World
Loneliness is one of the defining challenges of our time, and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has named it a public health crisis.
This guide is an invitation to act, not just read. It’s short on purpose. Inside you’ll find simple ideas like Be Together, Turn Toward Gifts, Invest in Rhythms, and Create Sensory Rich Memories. Try them in small ways, and they start to change how you see yourself and your community.
Don’t go through it alone. Invite a friend or a small group. Read it together, try the exercises together, and talk about what works.
This is a guide to use, not just read. Circle pages, take notes, try things, fail, try again. Over time, these small experiments build a way of living with more connection, belonging, and joy.
CHAPTER ONE: Be Together
BELONGING BEGINS WITH BEING TOGETHER
Belonging begins when someone notices you, welcomes you in, or includes you in something that matters. It grows through small, shared moments that help people feel seen, valued, and connected. Over time, these simple experiences build trust, create lasting memories, and lay the foundation for a real sense of community.
CHAPTER TWO: Turn Toward Gifts
INCLUSION BEGINS WHEN WE RECOGNIZE EACH OTHER’S GIFTS
Everyone has something to offer. Communities grow when we focus on those gifts instead of what’s missing. Too often, people are defi ned by labels or needs. But when we notice what lights them up, everything shifts. Gifts don’t have to be polished. They can be simple or quirky. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s participation. When we focus on gifts, we invite people to share who they are.

CHAPTER THREE: Invest in Rhythms
RHYTHMS CREATE CULTURE
Every community has a rhythm made of moments people return to, from annual events to weekly coffee with a neighbor. These gatherings shape belonging. When something happens consistently, it starts to matter, and trust grows.
Over time, these rhythms become the community’s soundtrack, helping us feel grounded and giving us shared stories and something steady to return to, especially when life feels uncertain.
DREAMING ORDINARY

CHAPTER FOUR: Sensory-Rich Memories
SENSORY-RICH MEMORIES SHAPE HOW WE REMEMBER LIFE
Memories are shaped by the senses. A familiar song, a warm hug, or the smell of something cooking can ground us and become part of our story. Shared meals and small moments stay with us for years, building trust and bonds that grow into friendship and love. Over time, these sensory memories shape identity and draw people back, giving life texture, meaning, and connection
Tim Vogt has spent his whole career providing support for people with disability labels. He thrived as the Executive Director of a legacy organization called Starfire in Cincinnati. Their work was highly regarded, but Tim began to wonder if it was actually delivering a full life to all the people being supported. His answer was deeply distressing, so he decided to transform the organization to do whatever would be needed to give people full lives in the community. This book is the story of that remarkable transition – the struggles, the complexity, and the emerging results. It is a leading-edge example of what can be done to reform and refresh hundreds of organizations so all of us can be full citizens together.
